NWFL 21 Matchday 5 Wraps: Bayelsa Queens’ winning streak ends as Sunshine Queens, Rivers Angels bag first away win

The Nigeria Women Football League Premiership returned on Wednesday from a short break allegedly to allow clubs to conduct the Covid-19 tests on their players and officials and seven exciting games were played across the country. Osun Babes remained in the fifth position with nine points from five games despite beating DreamStar Ladies 1-0 through Yetunde Fajobi’s 61st minute effort. Confluence Queens moved from 11th to the eighth position courtesy of the home win while FC Robo Queens slumped from the second spot to the fourth position by the virtue of the defeat. They have nine points from five games.

Pelican Stars are still in search of their first win of the season and their home draw with Royal Queens further put the team under pressure. It was Ogechi Ukwuoma that opened the scores for the home team in Calabar in the 15th minute but Chiamaka Okwuchukwu equalised for Royal Queens in the 71st minute.

Sunshine Queens picked their first away win of the season after they pipped Abia Angels 1-0 at the Umuahia Township Stadium through Seun Fakunle’s 33rd minute goal. The Owena Ladies thus moved two steps up to the seventh spot with seven points from five games but Abia Angels slipped to the 10th spot from their previous sixth spot. They have six points from the same number of games.

At the Godswill Akpabio Stadim, Uyo, Ibom Angels fell 1-0 at home to Rivers Angels as the Jewel of Rivers close in on the first spot currently occupied by Bayelsa Queens. Jennifer Oliver‘ 69th
minute own goal stabbed the hearts of Ibom Angels. Rivers Angels moved a spot up to the second position with 11 points from five games. Ibom Angels slid to 11th on the table with four points from the same number of games.

At the Agbor Township Stadium, Agbor, Delta Queens ended Bayelsa Queens’ winning start to the season after a 1-0 home victory. Rachael Okotete with the decisive strike in the 56th minute that lifted Delta Queens to the sixth spot with nine points from five matches while Bayelsa Queens remain in the first position with 12 points from as many games. But the Restoration Ladies have their lead cut down to a point ahead of the next round of games next week.

At the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin, Edo Queens just did enough to earn the maximum points off embattled Nasarawa Amazons. Elizabeth Zirike’s 38th-minute undertaking was enough to deliver the maximum points. Edo Queens moved to third on the table with 11 points from five games while Nasarawa Amazons are twelfth with three points from five games.
