Pelican Stars and Sunshine Queens have been officially relegated from the NWFL Premiership and must spend at least a season in the NWFL Championship after they ended their campaign at the bottom of the table as the curtain fell on the regular season.
On a frenetic last day of the season, Nasarawa Amazons pipped Edo Queens to the top of Group A table while Rivers Angels edged Bayelsa Queens 1-0 to end the regular season on a winning note.
At the Snake Farm Stadium, Nasarawa, Nasarawa Amazons outwitted Naija Ratels 3-2 to leapfrog Edo Queens at the top of Group A with 27 points from 12 games.
Precious Daniel put the visitors ahead with the curtain-raiser in the 10th minute but the Amazons scored twice in the next 16 minutes through Josephine Mathias and Amarachi Odoma in the 15th and 26th minutes before further goals in the second half. Naija Ratels, only on their debut season finished the regular season in third spot with 18 points and have qualified for the season ending Super 6 at the expense of established teams like Confluence Queens, Osun Babes and even Pelican Stars.
At the Lanlereke Stadium, Ile Ogbo, Osun state, Osun Babes ended the season in a comfortable fifth spot with 17 points after a 2-0 home win over Edo Queens who dropped to the second spot ahead of the Super 6 with 26 points. Grace Marcus’ double in the 12th and 43rd minutes made the three points certain.
In Calabar, Pelican Stars suffered their 10th loss of the season from just 12 games after fellow basement side, Adamawa Queens pipped them 1-0 to finish the season in the sixth spot with 12 points while Pelican Stars finished bottom with four points as they made an instant return to the lower league.
At the Umuahia Township Stadium, Abia Angels secured their second win of the season with a 1-0 over Sunshine Queens. The win courtesy Ijeoma Okeke’s seventh-minute strike catapulted Abia Angels to the fifth spot in Group B with 11 points. They are among the poorest scoring teams with three goals from 12 games despite the recruitment they did during the end of the first stanza. They won two games, drew five and lost five but Sunshine Queens slipped to the NWFL Championship with a mere seven points from 12 games.
Rivers Angels and Delta Queens with a photo finish to end the season in second spot respectively with 23 points and the same number of goals for, goals against and goals difference after they pipped Bayelsa Queens (who were assured of first spot with 24 points before the start of the game) and Royal Queens in Port Harcourt and Warri respectively.
Chiamaka Okwuchukwu struck for the Jewel of Rivers in the 27th minute to hand Edwin Okon led side their seventh win of the season while Mercy Omokwo bagged her seventh goal of the season in Delta Queens’ 1-0 win at Royal Queens. The Royals escaped the relegation zone by the whiskers in the sixth spot with 10 points.
