The Commissioner for youth and sports development in Yobe State, Goni Bukar Lawan is dead.
The late commissioner died in a fatal accident along Damaturu-Kano Highway.
Late Lawan, a former member House of Representatives, representing Bursari, Geidam, and Yunusari federal constituency – died on Tuesday evening.
Lawan’s death occurred after he attended the funeral of his friend, the Director of Finance and Supply of the Upstream of the NNPC, (Nigeria National Petroleum Commission) Hassan Gambo, on Tuesday afternoon in Damaturu before embarking on an official trip to Kano where he was involved in the accident near Dambam a community in Bauchi State.
Mamman Mohammed, the Director General Press Affairs to Governor Mai Mala Buni, confirmed the incident to Channels Television in a telephone conversation.
He said the commissioner’s corpse has been deposited at the mortuary of the Yobe State University Teaching Hospital Damaturu.
The governor’s aide explained that two of his friends, who were with him during the accident, are responding to treatment in one of the health facilities in the state.
Reacting to the accident, the Zonal Commanding Officer, Federal Road Safety Corps, Zone 12 covering Bauchi, Yobe and Borno states, Assistant Corps Marshal Rotimi Adeleye, told Channels Television that the incident happened adjacent A.Y Dagauda Filling Station.
Noting that no cause of the accident has been identified, Adeleye is of the opinion that the driver might have lost control.
“The accident involved one Lexus Jeep with registration number 11A-01YB Yobe state on his way from Damaturu to Kano,” he stated.
