Nigeria duo of Emmanuel Dennis and David Okereke have helped Club Brugge edge closer to picking a round of 16 berth in the Champions League after they thrashed Zenit St. Petersburg 3-0 in a Group F encounter played at Jan Breydel Stadion on Wednesday.
Dennis played the entire duration of the game and was even responsible for the assist for the third goal that was scored by Noa Lang in the 73rd minute while Okereke replaced Noa Lang in the 88th minute of the tie.
The win took Club Brugge’s points tally to seven points behind Borussia Dortmund (10 points) and Lazio (nine points) ahead of the concluding group stage fixtures next week. Brugge will trav to Rome to trade tackles with Lazio with a victory enough to land them one of the tickets from Group F.
In Group H, Odion Ighalo made a surprise cameo appearance for Manchester United who were beaten 3-1 at the Old Trafford Stadium by PSG with Neymar scoring two of the goals. The Red Devils must get at least a draw next week against RasenBallsport Leipzig in Germany if they are to progress.
Ighalo replaced Aaron Wan Bissaka in the 90th minute. With Leipzig winning 4-3 in Istanbul against Basaksehir who were without Azubuike Okechukwu, all the top three: Man U, PSG and Leipzig are on nine points each ahead of the deciding fixtures next Tuesday.
In Group E, Chelsea ensured they topped the group with a 4-0 spanking of Sevilla in Spain with Oliver Giroud scoring all four goals while Krasnodar secured their win of the group with a 1-0 victory over Rennes who are still without a win.
In Group G, Barcelona hold on to their leadership of the group ahead of next Tuesday’s blockbuster with Juventus at the Nou Camp, with a 3-0 away win over Ferencvaros in Hungary even while playing without Lionel Messi.
In the same group, Cristiano Ronaldo bagged his 750th career goal for clubs and country in Juventus’ 3-0 home win over Dynamo Kiev.
Barcelona are first while Juventus, Dynamo Kiev and Ferencvaros followed in that sequence with 15, 12, 1, and 1 point.
