South East Women Football Association Championship: GP World secure tourney’s first win

The maiden edition of the South East Women Football Association (SEWFA) Championship has kicked off today at the Old Township Stadium, Owerri with GP World of Nnewi recording the first win of the competition.

GP World FC of Nnewi got the better of Maureen Mmadu FA 2-1 in the opening game of the competition.

According to a statement made available by the Association Chairman, Mr Alex Nzekwe who also doubles as Proprietor of Awka Angels FC stated that the competition which was originally slated for August 4th, 2023 was now brought forward for safety reasons.

He also disclosed that the venue for the opening ceremony of championship initially fixed for the Dan Anyiam Stadium Owerri has now been moved to the Old Township Stadium on Tetlow road, Owerri today by 3pm as the Dan Anyiam Stadium is undergoing renovation work ahead of Heartland FC’s return to the NPFL.

The draw for the competition was conducted on Monday July 31, 2023 at the Imo FA Conference Room by the Football house officials.

Ten of the original 11 teams scheduled for the competition came and they have been drawn into two groups of five teams each.

In Group A are GP World, Nnewi, Maureen Mmadu FA, Onitsha, First Mahi Babes, Nwangele, Rising Stars of Anambra and Heartland Queens while Group B has Imo strikers Queens, Imo,
Awka Angels FC, Anambra, Giant Empress FC, Abia, Green Foot FA, Ojoto and Solo Wonders FC, Abia.

The second game of the day is between Imo Strikers Queens and Awka Angels by 12noon.

First Mahi Babes will trade tackles with Rising Stars FA by 2pm all at Old Township Stadium, Owerri in the third game of the day.

The rest of the games will continue from Wednesday with three matches each day at 10am, 12noon and 4pm respectively.

The grouping is as follows.

Group A:

GP World FA – Nnewi

Maureen Mmadu FA – Onitsha

First Mahi Babes – Nwangele

Rising Stars – Anambra

Heartland Queens – Owerri

Group B:

Imo strikers Queens – Imo.

Awka Angels FC – Anambra.

Giant Empress FC – Abia.

Green Foot FA – Ojoto.

Solo Wonders FC – Abia
