Heartland Comets pipped Pakat FC 1-0 yesterday in the opening game of the 2022 Bet9ja Grassroots Super League for the Owerri centre played at the Old Stadium, Tetlow road, Owerri.

The opening ceremony which had Master Super Agent Dr Obinna Josh Smart Unegbu in attendance was watched by a capacity crowd with Dennis Ikechukwu scoring the lone goal in the 27th minute to ensure Heartland Comets assumed the leadership of Group A with three points from a game played.

Malick Pro FC and Oyoyo FC, the other remaining two teams in the group will face each other on Wednesday at the same venue by 4pm.

Speaking at the end of the hotly contested game, Master Super Agent Dr Obinna Unegbu said the tournament which is ongoing simultaneously in all three zones in Imo state was organised to give back to the society especially youths who have been encouraged to shun drugs and other illicit activities and play for their future.

“This is being carried out in the three zones. We have one currently going on in Orlu and another in Okigwe. We expect that in the next two to three weeks all these games would have been completed. We have eight teams in the Owerri zone. Some have 16 and 24 teams depending on how they want it in their zone,” Dr Unegbu told journalists.

“We are giving back to the society especially to the youths telling them to shun drugs and play for the future just like the theme of the tournament has it. There is still a future for our youths yes it may look bleak now but we believe there is a better future for them through sports,” he added.

The continues this evening with action shifting to Group B where Campos FC will slug it out with Kun Khalifat at the Old Stadium, Tetlow Road, Owerri.
