Nasarawa United, Likeminds, FWC Champions, and Sectraco have qualified for the quarter final of the ongoing Unity Preseason Tournament in Abuja from Group A and C while Lobi Stars and City FC have picked last eight spots technically from Group B.
The tournament aimed at providing competitive games for some teams in the Nigeria Professional Football League, Nigeria National League and non-league has lives up to its billing on its second edition.
Nasarawa United topped Group A with maximum six points from two games after wins over Likeminds and Mailantarki FC while Likeminds qualified alongside the Solid Miners after a battling goalless draw against Mailantarki FC on Monday. Likeminds’ solitary strike in their 2-1 loss to Nasarawa United and the draw with Mailantarki FC proved to be the reasons for their last eight qualification.
Both teams will await opponents from Group B for their quarter final games. City FC and Lobi Stars have already qualified from the group but the group leader is yet to be determined. The Pride of Benue will face IB Sporting Dreams by 10am today with a win putting the former NPFL champions on top of the group while City FC who are campaigning in the NNL.
FWC Champions FC thrashed Nurudeen FC 2-0 to top Group C with seven points on goals difference ahead of Setraco FC who pipped Destiny FC 1-0. Both advanced from the group.
The two teams that will complete the quarter final fixtures from Group D will emerge after the conclusion of the group games this afternoon.
High flying non- league side, Mahanaim FC are atop the group presently with four points from two games after they fought their way to a goalless draw against highly rated EFCC FC on Monday. It was a follow up to their surprise 1-0 win over NPFL bound Doma United FC.
Mahanaim FC will have their hands full when they trade tackles with Wikki Tourists by 2pm this afternoon at the Old Parade Group, Abuja. They need at least a draw to qualify for the quarter final but the Giant Elephants with two draws thus far against EFCC and Doma United needs an outright three points to contemplate a last eight ticket if at all.
EFCC FC will slug it out with Doma United at the Area 3 Stadium, Abuja with both sides mathematically in contention for the quarter final ticket. Both teams need a win if they are to advance.
Unity Preseason Tournament which debuted last year in Abuja with Plateau United as the inaugural champions has former Abia Warriors Sporting Director, Patrick Ngwaogu as General Coordinator.
