Rumble in Owerri as 27 teams contest for Pan Nigerian Youth Governor’s Cup

In order to keep Imo youths active and refrain from social vices, the Pan Nigerian Youth Governor’s Cup will debut as from Sunday, August 11th, 2024 at the Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education, Owerri, Imo State.

The competition which is pitted into two parts has one for higher institutions of learning in Imo state and the second for Youth organisations in the Eastern Heartland.

This is packaged by four hard working Imo State Commissioners who are: Commissioner for Sports, Honourable Obinna Evaritus Onyeocha (Onowu); Commissioner for Youth & Talent Hunt, Honourable Dr. Emeka Mandela Ukaegbu; Commissioner for Education (Primary & Secondary), Prof. Johncliff Chike Nwadike and Commissioner for Tertiary & Technical Education, Prof. Victor Nwachukwu.

The following universities are to participate in the competition in the tertiary level cadre: Imo State University (IMSU), Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Imo State Polytechnic, Omuma, Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education, Owerri, Imo State University of Agriculture ,Umuagwo.

Others are Federal College of Lands Resources and Technology Oforola(FECOLART), Imo College of Education, Ihitte Uboma, Imo State College of Health, Amaigbo, Kingsley Ozumba Mbadiwe University, Ogboko, College of Nursing, Orlu.

The youth team part has 15 teams that are ready to contest for honours. The teams are Boys Scout, MOD, Cadet, Boys Brigade, Man O’ War, Chaplain, Royal Ambassadors, Royal Rangers, CYON, AYF, MYF, PFN, NYCN, IYP and NYSC.

Speaking on the essence of the competition, the Honourable Commissioner for Sports, Honourable Obinna Evaristus Onyeocha said the four ministries deemed it fit to put the Pan Nigerian Youth Governor’s Cup together to appreciate the good works of Governor Hope Uzodinma whose giant strides are evident in all the facets of the state.

He said the competition would also take the youths off the streets, active, busy and free their minds off social vices.

Honourable Onyeocha, assured that everything has been put in place to ensure that the youths of Imo State have a good time during the competition and that mouthwatering prizes await those that excel at the tournament.

Onyeocha said five million Naira is up for grabs for the team that wins in the youth category while the second and third will smile home with three million Naira and two million Naira respectively.

Three million Naira will be in the kitty of the higher institutions of learning that comes top in that cadre while the second position will be rewarded with two million Naira. The third position in the higher institutions of learning category will go home with one million Naira.
