Owerri came alive over the weekend as football legends and fans gathered at the Dan Anyiam Stadium practice pitch in Owerri to celebrate the birthday of renowned pharmacist and ex-footballer, Anderson “World Best” Anyiam.
The highlight of the festivities was a novelty match between Owerri Fitness Club (OFC) and Team World Best XI, which featured several former Super Eagles stars. Emmanuel Amuneke, the 1994 CAF Footballer of the Year and 1996 Olympics Gold medallist, rolled back the years by scoring the only goal of the match in the 25th minute, handing victory to Team World Best XI.
The celebrant, Anyiam, who once played for Ebedei, Ekiti United, and Bussdor United, is no stranger to the beautiful game. He also carries a rich footballing heritage as a descendant of the legendary Dan Anyiam, Nigeria’s first national team captain and former coach of the Green Eagles and Spartans.
The match drew an array of other big names including Olympic gold medalist Mobi Oparaku. Others Casmir Mbachu, Friday Onyeukwu (Ekpo), Ike ThankGod, and Sampson Chuki, Chinedu Efugh among others.
Speaking after the game, a visibly moved Anyiam expressed his gratitude:
“I wish to thank all my friends, ex-internationals, and football greats who came out to celebrate with me. Words are not enough to describe how delighted I felt. This is not just about football—it’s about gratitude, friendship, and celebrating life.”
He further extended appreciation for the goodwill messages, calls, and gifts he received, adding a prayer that others would also be celebrated in their lifetime.
The celebration continued on Sunday, September 7, 2025, with a thanksgiving service at Christ Embassy, Ogbaku, Mbaitoli LGA, Imo State, rounding off a weekend of joy and camaraderie.
With football legends, vibrant fans, and a festive spirit, Owerri witnessed a birthday celebration that will linger in memory for years to come.
