Former Under 23 star, Taiwo Awoniyi netted his second goal in the last four days to help his German club, Union Berlin overcome troubled Borussia Dortmund 2-1 in a league tie on Friday night.
Awoniyi who was also on the score-sheet in Union Berlin 2-2 draw at VfB Stuttgart on Tuesday followed that up with the curtain-raiser on Friday in the 57th minute for his fourth goal of the season.
The first half had ended goalless before the Nigerian scored about 12 minutes after the second half restart but the euphoria his goal could only last for three minutes with Dortmund’s Youssoufa Moukoko scoring the equaliser in the 60th minute to become the youngest ever Bundesliga goalscorer at 16 years, 28 days. Moukoko beat the record set by Bayer Leverkusen’s teenage sensation, Florian Wirtz who netted his first goal for his club when he was 17 years, one month and three days in June this year.
Union Berlin were not cowed by Borussia Dortmund’s leveller with Awoniyi leading the charge to go in search of the winning goal to hand coach Edin Terzic is first defeat as a Dortmund coach. The wait didn’t last long as Marvin Friedrich bagged the matchwinner in the 78th minute for Union Berlin to the delight of their Manager, Urs Fischer.
The win which was Union Berlin’s first in the last three games has helped catapult them to the fifth spot with 21 points from 13 games while Dortmund slipped to fourth with 22 points from 13 matches.
Awoniyi has played 11 games for Union Berlin this season from 13 and he has netted three goals this month alone in addition to the one he got against Cologne on the 22nd November. The Striker scored against Hertha Berlin (December 4th), Stutgart (December 15th) and Borussia Dortmund (December 18th).
Union Berlin’s next game is against Werder Bremen on January 2nd, 2021.
