Edo Queens, Bayelsa Queens, FC Robo, Rivers Angels and Sunshine Queens all ramped up scintillating victories yesterday to as ance their cause as favourites for the ongoing Betsy Obaseki Women’s Football Tournament holding in Benin City, Edo State.
It was Bayelsa Queens that started the flurry of goals when they dazed Kaduna Queens 6-0 in a one sided affair decided at the UNIBEN Sports Centre.
Favour Emmanuel, Juliet Sunday, Miracle Joseph, Chinyere Igboamalu, Celine Ottah, and Kafayat Bashiru all scored a goal each to ensure the Restoration Ladies are atop Group C with four points and plus six goals difference.
In another Group C tie, Sunshine Queens scooped all three points in their first game of the tournament after they pipped fellow NWFL Premiership side, Confluence Queens 1-0 yesterday. Taiwo Ajibade notched the only goal of the game in the 28th minute. The Owena Mermaids are second in the group with three points while Confluence Queens are third with just a point ahead of Thursday’s final group games.
In Group B, Rivers Angels earned another crucial win to make it consecutive victories after they thrashed Royal Queens 3-0.
Royal Queens were able to repel the Jewel of Rivers in the first half holding them to a goalless draw but they lost steam towards the end of the game and they were hit by three unreplied goals.
Edafe Mamuzo got the curtain-raiser for Rivers Angels, who are Nigeria’s CAF Women’s Champions League representative, in the 79th minute. It became two four minutes later through Precious Christopher while Ifeoma Paulinus got the third in the 87th minute. It was her second goal of the tourney.
FC Robo Queens and Gift Monday continued to send tongue wagging in the tournament after they scored five goals for the second game in their 5-0 demolition of Fortress Ladies. Monday who scored twice in their win over Royal Queens netted all five goals in their victory over Fortress Ladies yesterday.
Monday, the Super Falcons striker has now scored seven goals from two games and she’s the overwhelming choice for the Most Valuable Player and highest scorer awards even after just two games.
In Group A, Edo Queens whipped Rolly Angels 4-0 with Habibat Agbaji on the score sheet twice for her third goal of the tourney while Chioma Olise and Emmen Essien added a goal each. Naija Ratels and Heartland Queens played a goalless draw in the other group tie.
Edo Queens are on top with six points and are through to the next round while Heartland Queens are second with four points. Naija Ratels are third with a point.
Today is regarded as a rest day but Sunshine Queens will face Kaduna Queens in the only game of the day. It was supposed to be played on Monday but the game was shifted because of the late arrival of Kaduna Queens.
There is still all to play for as the group stage comes to an end on Thursday.
