The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has expressed concern over the lack of deliberate investment in sports by some state governments, warning that such neglect not only stifles grassroots talent but also robs the youth of opportunities that can help tackle insecurity and improve national well-being.
This was among the key resolutions reached at its National Convention held inside the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, at the close of the 9th National Youth Games (NYG).
SWAN, in its communiqué signed by members of the drafting committee, lauded the National Sports Commission for sustaining the NYG and urged stricter measures against age-cheating to protect the credibility of the competition. The body further commended Delta State for hosting a successful Games and congratulated Lagos State for emerging overall winners for the first time in the history of the event.
SWAN frowned at the poor commitment of some state governments towards youth and sports development, noting the absence of Ebonyi, Gombe, Zamfara, Borno, and Kebbi States at the 9th edition. The association stressed that beyond empowerment, sports play a critical role in addressing insecurity and promoting the well-being of citizens..
SWAN expressed delight at the sustained organisation of the NYG by the National Sports Commission, while urging stronger measures to curb age-cheating in order to preserve the integrity and developmental purpose of the grassroots competition.
Special commendation was extended to Edo State Sports Commission Chairman, Hon. Amadin Desmond Enabulele; Ogun State Commissioner of Sports, Hon. Wasiu Isiaka; and Nigeria Volleyball Federation President, Engr. Musa Nimrod, for their bold initiatives and strong media engagement in advancing sports development.
Looking ahead, SWAN wished Enugu State Government success in its preparations for the 2026 National Sports Festival, urging timely renovation of facilities and inclusion of the SWAN Chapter Chairman in the Local Organising Committee, as was the practice in previous editions.
The association also called on state governments to grant sports journalists easier access to cover sporting activities within their states. Internally, SWAN encouraged members to update their registrations to enjoy unhindered access to national competitions, maintain high levels of professionalism, and ensure the inclusion of women in the coverage of major events.
Finally, SWAN urged members nationwide to gear up for its 60th Diamond Jubilee Anniversary coming up in October 2025, calling for support through sponsorships and partnerships to make the celebration a memorable one.
The communiqué was signed by Chimezie Anaso (Chairman, Anambra State Chapter), Abel Leonard (Secretary, Nasarawa State Chapter), Johnson Bassey (Akwa Ibom State), and Ikenna Okonkwo (Secretary-General, SWAN).
