Team Nigeria won her first gold medal at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Birmingham on Saturday as Adijat Adenike Olarinoye coasted home to the exalted position in the women’s 55kg of the Weightlifting event.
She lifted 92kg in the snatch, 111kg in clean and jerk, lifting 203kg in total to claim the gold medal ahead of other competitors.
India’s Bindyarani Dayvi Sorokhaibam Lifter settled for the silver with 202kg total lift, while England’s Fraer Morrow settled for the bronze with 198kg lift.
Olarinoye’s victory threw Team Nigeria’s camp into jubilation after the other Nigerian lifters failed to make the podium.
Stella Kingsley in the 49kg settled for the fourth spot despite lifting a personal best.
