.Nse Uko inspires the nation’s fourth gold
Team Nigeria finished third at the just concluded World Athletics Under 20 Championships after adding one more gold and a bronze medal yesterday on the final day of hostilities in Nairobi, Kenya.
Golden girl, Imaobong Nse Uko made it three gold medals for herself yesterday after she inspired Team Nigeria to another gold medal in the women’s 4x400m Relay’s final to ensure that Nigeria ended the championships with four gold and three bronze medals.
Opeyemi Oke, Ella Onojuvwevwo, and Favour Ofili who ran the final leg were the other three that combined to ensure Team Nigeria finished with a World Under 20 leading time of 3:31.46 seconds. Jamaica and Italy were second and third with a time of 3:36.57 and 3:37.18 seconds respectively.
It was Nigeria’s fourth gold medal after the nation placed first in the 4x400m Mixed Relay, 400m women, 200m men, and 4x400m women.
Nigeria’s bronze medals were achieved by Favour Ofili (200m), Chinecherem Nnamdi (Javelin), and women’s 4x100m Relay where the quartet of Praise Ofoku, Favour Ofili, Anita Taviore, and Tima Godbless.
Kenya finished first in the overall medals table with 8 gold, 1 silver, and 7 bronze medals while Finland (four gold, one silver) and Nigeria (four gold, three bronze medals) were second and third with respectively.
Ethiopia, Jamaica, South Africa, Botswana, Sweden, France, Czech Republic, and Namibia were the other nations in the Top 11.
The next edition of the World Junior Athletics Championships comes up in Cali, Colombia next year.
