Ushi Na Aboshi, Ihiagwa Nekede secured the first victory of the 2nd Imo State Football Association Veterans Cup which began last weekend at the training pitch of the Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri following their 2-1 win over Fit Friends FC of New Owerri in the opening match of the competition.
Ekene Umelo scored the first goal of the competition in the first half to give Fit Friends FC a surprise lead but two second half goals from Meshack Alaekwe turned the game around in favour of Ushi Na Abosi All Stars FC.
Speaking with journalists at the end of the opening ceremony, the Chairman, Local Organising Committee (LOC), Casmir Mbachu was delighted the opening ceremony was hitch free and he assured that everything has been put in place for a near perfect competition.
He said the competition is meant for 40 years old and above who have not played professional football in the past five years adding that the competition would help create fun and better synergy among the All Stars teams in Imo State.
He called on Imo corporate companies and spirited individuals to come and sponsor the competition.
Actions continued in the competition on Sunday with San Siro All Stars FC causing the first major upset after beating the reigning champions, Diamond Dynamics All Stars FC 1-0 while Stainless FC were held to a 1-1 draw by Friends All Stars FC in the other game.
More matches are billed for the weekend in the competition with AXEF All Stars facing Genesis All Stars on Saturday August 17th, 2024 by 8.00am while Imo Football Legends will square up against World Bank All Stars same day by 4pm.
On Sunday August 18th, 2024 Mbano United will trade tackles with Ikwebuike Club 69 by 8.00am while Ushi Na Aboshi will play their second game of the competition against Obedient All Stars same Sunday by 4pm.
14 teams are taking part in the second edition of the Imo State Football Assocation Veterans Cup.
The competition which is a brain child of the Barrister Ifeanyi Dike led Imo State FA is aimed at promoting wellness and opportunities for networking of ideas between the ex-players and their fans, who may not have heard much about them since they retired from the game.
