Turkish Super Cup: Nwakaeme pips Okechukwu to title

One cap Super Eagles attacker, Anthony Nwakaeme and Trabzonspor added to the misery of reigning Turkish Super Lig champions, Istanbul Basaksehir complete with Azubuike Okechukwu on Wednesday after they pipped them to the Turkish Super Cup title.

Basaksehir emerged double champions in the league and the FA Cup last season and were made to face the team that placed second in the league last season, Trabzonspor to affirm the best team in Turkey last season.

Okechukwu made a rare first-team appearance for his sixth game of the season in all competitions and was replaced by Enzo Crivelli in the 55th minute while his compatriot, Nwakaeme played for 90 minutes in his 17th game of the campaign in all competitions with five goals and four assists.

Djaniny struck first for Trabzonspor three minutes after the restart of the second-half but Demba Ba equalised for Basaksehir in the 58th minute before Caleb Ekuban grabbed Trabzonspor’s matchwinner in the 86th minute.

Istanbul Basalsehir were reduced to 10 men in the 74th minute with Alexandru Epureanu dismissal for his second bookable offence in the game.
