For many years, the hope to have an Abuja-based football club play in the Nigeria top-flight football league was just a mere imagination as no Abuja-based club has gone beyond the Nigerian National League in recent years

However, The General Manager of NNL side Sporting Supreme FC, Shuaibu Yakubu has promised football lovers in the Nations Capital City that elite league football will return as soon as next season with his side ready to break the jinx and ensure fans are treated to the best of football every week.

Speaking with newsmen in Abuja, the GM of the Club Mr. Shuaibu Yakubu spoke about the team’s readiness to break the 14-year curse and become the first Abuja-based club to qualify and play in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).

“The entire team is fully motivated and everyone can see this from the results in the league so far. We flew the team to Sokoto for the game against Kebbi United and the result came. I can authoritatively tell you that the winning bonus of the two games played so far has been paid to the players and officials” he stated.

The well-experienced and soft-spoken Niger State-born football administrator further stated that he is very optimistic that the team will bring NPFL games to Abuja next season.

“I understand Nigeria’s football league system and at this level, we are deploying everything at our disposal to ensure that we bring NPFL to Abuja. We have created an enabling and conducive environment for the team to do well and I am sure that those who know us are not surprised with the result so far” he added.

Sporting Supreme FC next heads into a double-away derby fixture with fellow Abuja-based Mailantarki FC and City FC in MD 3 and 4 with victories in these two games further strengthening their promotion chances.

A 2-1 victory away at Kebbi United set the tone rolling for a perfect start to the season before maintaining their 100% start on match day 2 with a convincing 3-1 home win against Jigawa United to stay top with 6 points from a possible six.
