.Rivers United hitman scores a brace in Ibadan
Rivers United’s Chijioke Akuneto has raced to the top of the Nigeria Professional Football League goals chart after his double in Ibadan propelled him to 18 goals to move two goals clear of the chasing packs.
Akuneto who helped the Pride of Rivers to the league title in only his first season with the club was at the double at the Lekan Salami Stadium, Adamasingba, Ibadan in Rivers United 3-2 away loss to Shooting Stars.
Emmanuel Lucky and Olufemi Opeoluwa put the Oluyole Warriors two goals up in the 20th and 25th minutes but Akuneto reduced the goals tally in the 26th minute. Moses Omoduemuke made it three goals in two games to extend Shooting Stars’ lead to 3-1. Akuneto scored his second goal of the game in the 47th minute for his 18th goal of the season.
He is two goals ahead of Abdulazeez Yusuf (Gombe United) who has 16 goals but fired blank in the Desert Scorpions’ 1-0 home win over Enugu Rangers and ex-Enyimba goal scorer, Victor Mbaoma who had 16 goals before his switch to the Algerian league.
