Taiwo Awoniyi was unavailable for Union Berlin but the German club managed to end their five-game winless streak with a 1-0 away victory at Freiburg yesterday.

Awoniyi was unable to recover from a knock he suffered in training preparatory to the game and was subsequently omitted from the matchday squad but Union Berlin didn’t feel his absence as Grisha Promel’s 64th-minute goal off Marcus Ingvartson’s right-wing cross.

The away win has taken Union Berlin’s point haul to 33 from 22 games and are seventh on the log.

Awoniyi has played 19 league games with five goals. It is unclear if he will be available for Union Berlin’s next Sunday’s home game with Kevin Akpoguma’s Hoffenheim.
