Abia Warriors played out a 1-1 draw with Sunshine Stars in their opening game of the Governor Okezie Victor Ikpeazu Preseason Tournament played Monday evening at the Enyimba International Stadium, Aba.
In the maiden edition of the tournament, Abia Warriors were beaten finalists but they have begun the second edition on a shaky note after they conceded a stoppage time goal to settle for a draw against the Owena Whales.
The Umuahia side opened the game’s account of goals in the 56th minute through John Peter after the Owena Whales managed to repel them in the first half but Sunshine Stars stopped Abia Warriors from getting the three points after Michael Olalusi equalised in the dying moments from the penalty spot for both teams to settle for a point each.
The draw meant that Supreme Kings continued to occupy top stop in Group B with three points while Abia Warriors and Sunshine Stars are joint second with a point.
Earlier, Ngwa United lost to Ahudiya FC by a lone goal. Junior Emmanuel’s 67th minute effort was enough to hand crucial points to Ahudiya FC who are now second in Group A with three points, the same as Enyimba but are below the People’s Elephant by goals difference.
Israel Emenike netted twice for Apex Krane in their 2-1 win over South City who was a late replacement for Heartland FC who chickened out at the last minutes. Maduka Emmanuel pulled one back for South City to make it a respectable scoreline.
Tomorrow, Enyimba will be eyeing their second victory when they face Ahudiya FC in a battle between the first and second teams in Group A. It holds by 9am at the Enyimba International Stadium, Aba.
City FC and Ngwa United will square up in another Group A fixture in a clash between two teams who lost their opening games. The Abuja based City FC will be eager to record their first win after the 2-0 defeat to Enyimba FC.
In Group B Sunshine Stars will go for the jugular of the group leader, Supreme Kings. They need an outright win to put them in right stead to be in the top two after the conclusion of group stage games.
