Former Nigeria Professional Football League highest scorer, Silas Nwankwo has torn his anterior cruciate ligament and must now require surgery.
Nwankwo who joined Swedish Allsvenskan in January at the beginning of the Scandinavian country’s season sustained the injury on the final day of the season for Mjaellby AIF in their 1-0 away win over Djurgaarden on November 6th.
Reports on the official website of the Swedish topflight side indicated that series of tests were conducted and they found out the former Nasarawa United striker torn his ACL and he is expected to be out of action for about one year.
“Striker Silas Nwankwo was injured in the Allsvenskan’s last round away to Djurgården. The subsequent MRI shows that the injury requires surgery and that the anterior cruciate ligament is torn,” the club’s official website stated.
“The injury means that an operation is now expected for Silas and then a rehabilitation of around 12 months.
“Silas Nwankwo has contributed greatly with his efforts on the pitch since joining the club last winter. Silas became the team’s best scorer during the season with 9 goals in 28 games.
“Silas has suffered an anterior cruciate ligament tear that will require surgery. Surgery will take place next week and then a 9-12 month rehabilitation awaits before a full return to football is possible , comments rehab manager Amanda Nilsson.
“We wish Silas a speedy recovery and hope to see him back on the field as soon as possible.”
Nwankwo played 28 games in the just concluded season scoring nine goals to emerge as the club’s highest scorer in his debut season.
