Former Super Eagles midfielder, Finidi George has charged the Nigeria senior national team to ensure they all that is possible to secure maximum points in their first Group D game of the 2021 AFCON against the Pharaohs of Egypt on January 11th next year to deter unnecessary pressure.
The Eagles are paired in Group D alongside Djurtus of Guinea Bissau, Egypt, and Falcons of Jediane of Sudan but are billed to face the seven times winner of the competition, Egypt in the opening game.
George who won the AFCON with the Eagles in 1994 in Tunisia before the same team dazzled the world a few months later in the United States at the World Cup, noted that it is important for Nigeria to work towards a positive start in Cameroon next year.
The former Real Betis and Ipswich winger also beseeched the Eagles not to be complacent when they face Sudan and Guinea Bissau later because there are no underdogs again in football.
“I think is an interesting group and Nigeria should top or come 2nd in that group,” Finidi told www.dasportstainment247.com.
“There are no underdogs anymore in football therefore should approach all games with seriousness
“They have to win the first game to avoid unnecessary pressure in subsequent games.”
Finidi who alongside Kanu Nwankwo won the UEFA Champions League with Ajax Amsterdam in 1995 warned against lackadaisical approach to the Eagles’ preparations for the 2021 AFCON and the competition itself.
“Nigeria always have a chance in every competition but it all depends on our approach to every game.”
The Eagles will play all their Group D games at the Roumde Adjia Stadium, Garoua against Egypt on January 11th, Sudan on January 15th, and Guinea Bissau on January 19th, 2022.
