Pokwangli United confirmed the domination of Kaltungo LGA teams in the 6th Adamu Yola Gombe South Unity Cup after they became the third club from the LGA to qualify for the semi-final of this year’s edition.
Peace Uwandi’s brace secured a 2-1 victory over Gwandum Academy in a quarter-final game played at the Billiri Township Stadium on Thursday.
Uwandi’s opener just before halftime got Pokwangli off to a perfect start in what was a must-win game if their hope of winning the competition is to be kept alive.
He completed his brace from the spot after he was fouled by the Gwandum defender a few moments after the second half resumed.
Gwandum Academy worked harder to try and get a goal before pushing for an equalizer and it paid off after Ado Shamsudeen capitalized on a goalkeeping error to bring Gwandum back into the game.
With the scores at 2-1, Gwandum dictated the pace of the game and had two penalty appeals turned down by the centere referee, Bawa Buhari.
Goalkeeper Innocent John produced a brilliant sprawling save to prevent Ali Yunusa from snatching a late equalizer for the Gwandum side as they bowed out of the competition with their heads held high.
Pokwangli United will now tackle Samba Boys in the semi-final game slated for Monday December 27th while Oska United and Balanga LGA team face each other in the second semi-final fixed for the same day at the Billiri Township Stadium, Billiri LGA, Gombe State.
