The race for the Nigeria Women’s Professional League Premiership intensified on Wednesday with all the top five teams securing important wins as the league reaches halfway mark next midweek.

The biggest winners were the Rivers Angels who returned to winning ways after three unsuccessful bids in their away success in Lafia against former league champions, Nasarawa Amazons in a topsy turvy tie that ended 2-1.

Ugochi Emenayo scored the opening goal of the game for the Christopher Danjuma lasses in the 52nd minute but the Rivers’ Jewel came back forcefully and grabbed the equaliser through Vivian Ikechukwu in the 56th minute before Maryan Ezenagu netted the back-breaking winner 20 minutes from time.

Rivers Angels kept their third position with 25 points from 12 games ahead of the blockbuster fixture with Bayelsa Queens next week in the last game of the first round. Nasarawa Amazons slumped to the eighth spot with 17 points. They travel to Akure as guests of Sunshine Queens next week.

Bayelsa Queens kept the heat on Rivers Angels and the other chasing teams with a routine 3-1 home win over DreamStar Ladies. The Restoration Ladies kept their six-point cushion ahead of Jewel of Rivers before their much anticipated next week clash.

Chiamaka Igwe notched two goals in the 46th and 92nd minutes. League’s leading scorer, Charity Reuben continued her blistering form with the second goal in the 48th minute. Bulkola Owoseni’s 52nd-minute strike became a consolation goal.

Bayelsa Queens are first on the log with 31 points from 12 games while DreamStar remain last with five points.

FC Robo Queens relied on Shukura Oladipupo’s goal to beat battling Sunshine Queens 1-0 in Lagos while Amarachi Ojinma’s 80th-minute goal saved Delta Queens’ blushes against Pelican Stars.

Edo Queens pipped hard fighting Osun Babes 1-0 at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City in a tie played under floodlights. Elizabeth Zirike’s 51st-minute effort was enough to hand the Obaseki Ladies a vital home win.

Confluence Queens triumphed 2-1 at home to Royal Queens while Abia Angels got their first maximum points after several weeks of failure. They beat Ibom Angels 1-0 in Umuahia.
