NWFL Premiership Day 6 Review: Naija Ratels, Rivers Angels surrender unbeaten start; Edo, Bayelsa Queens reclaim top spots

The Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) Premiership entered matchday six midweek with four home wins, one away win and a draw the major highlights of thee six matches played across the country.

Quite unexpected based on their barnstorming start to the season, Rivers Angels and Naija Ratels relinquished their unbeaten start to the season in games played at Nembe and Abuja against Bayelsa Queens and Nasarawa Amazons while Edo Queens and Delta Queens recorded impressive home wins to keep their unbeaten start to the season intact but Sunshine Queens were held to a draw at home by Abia Angels.

It was a midweek Bayelsa Queens overtook Rivers Angels as Group B leaders while Edo Queens maintained top spot in Group A despite Nasarawa Amazons breathing down their neck.

Naija Ratels 0-1 Nasarawa Amazons:

Naija Ratels’ unbeaten streak came to an abrupt end after they suffered their first league defeat of the season in front of their fans at the Old Parade Ground, Area 10, Abuja, on Wednesday.

A 27th minute strike from Tarnum Dooshima was enough for the visitors to secure their second away win of the season. Naija Ratels slumped to the third spot with eight points but Nasarawa Amazons maintained second spot with 12 points in Group A.

Edo Queens 3-0 Osun Babes:

At the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin, the Obaseki Ladies demolished Omoluabi Queens 3-0, thanks to Adaobi Okah’s brace and Yemisi Samuel strike. It was Edo Queens’ fourth win of the season from six games as they kept the heat on as Group A leaders with 14 points.

The 3-0 whitewash was Osun Babes’ fourth loss of the season as they sank deeper in the relegation zone with three points from a possible 15. They are sixth on the log.

Adamawa Queens 1-0 Pelican Stars:

Adamawa Queens managed to eke their second win of the season at home at the Pantami Stadium, Gombe against stubborn Pelican Stars.

Ijeoma Obi popped home the only goal of the encounter from the penalty spot in the 57th minute to leave the Calabar side at the bottom of Group A without a goal nor point after five games.

Adamawa Queens jumped to the fifth spot with six points from five games in Group A.

Sunshine Queens 1-1 Abia Angels:

In Akure, Abia Angels held Sunshine Queens to a 1-1 draw. Nmesoma Ibeh connected a Aisha Omolola’s pass before displacing the goalkeeper to slot into the net in the 11th minute but Abdulwaheed Miriam tapped the ball into the net for the equalizer in the 76th minute to ensure that Abia Angels’ search for first win of the season continues.

Sunshine Queens are fifth on the log with four points from five games but Abia Angels are still at the basement of the table with three points from five games. The Angels however bagged their first goal of the season in the 1-1 draw.

Bayelsa Queens 1-0 Rivers Angels:

It was the star match of the midweek fixtures and it surely lived up to the pre-match hype in the blockbuster game played in Nembe.

Itimi Mercy’s 25th minute strike was enough to end Rivers Angels’ unbeaten start to the season while the hosts also moved top of Group B with one point ahead of Rivers Angels with 11 points from six games. Rivers Angels slipped to the second spot with 10 points from five games.

Delta Queens 5-1 Royal Queens:

In the Deltan derby, Delta Queens pummeled Royal Queens 5-1 at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba.

Peace Abbey opened the scoring in the 14th minute before Taiwo Afolabi doubled it in the 22th minute and Rebecca Ajegbemile extended the lead to 3-0 before halftime.

Tosin Ogundeko reduced the visitors deficit on the resumption of the second half but Comfort Folorunsho’s 52nd minute penalty and Chinasa Agoh’s 87th minute strikes secured an emphatic win for the hosts.

Delta Queens who are unbeaten after five games are third with nine points but Royal Queens are in the sixth spot with four points from five games.
