Nigeria may miss out of Tokyo 2020 Olympics 4x100m, 4×400 & 4×400 mixed relays due to AFN/ Ministry of Sports feud

Rather than process visa for World Relays in Poland, athletes information were forwarded to American embassy for an Olympics training camp which they’ve not qualified for

The World Relays in Silesia would have afforded Team Nigeria a chance of qualification, but the political battle between Sunday Dare backed Olumide George and duly elected Shehu Gusau for the soul of Athletics Federation of Nigeria is taking the shine off athletics and Olympics qualification

Failure to participate in the WR after athletes have been registered means Nigeria will have to battle for 1 of the 3 remaining slots in the relays (especially in the men’s events) before the end of qualifying period

Why is the Ministry/Minister sabotaging AFN?

Why is the Ministry disregarding court directive and that of World Athletics?

Is the ongoing politics worth the future of Nigerian athletes?

Dear Mary Onyali Mfr , you an ex-international athlete and presently Special Adviser to the Minister.

Without athletics, I doubt if the world would have known your name

Many seem to be fingering you and some ex-internationals as this battle rages

Kindly take a step back, think about the athletes first, the implication of missing out of the Olympics and see whether it’s worth it

Posterity will never forgive anybody behind this unnecessary drama few months to the Olympics

Why don’t we all work together and prosecute a successful Olympics then come back to play the politics during the National Federations elections after the games?
