Nigeria Women’s Under 17 national team, the Flamingos brightened their chances of qualifying for the FIFA Under 17 Women’s World Cup with a 4-0 whiplash of Egypt in the first leg of the third round of the qualifiers at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Abuja yesterday.

The Bankole Olowookere tutored players scored through the goals of Opeyemi Ajakaye (28th minute), Omowunmi Bello (2) in the 38th and 62nd and Miracle Usani in the 54th minute to put the Flamingos in vantage spot ahead of the return leg in Cairo in two weeks.

In the other games played across Africa in the same qualifiers, Cameroon thrashed Zambia 2-0 in Lusaka; Tanzania whipped Burundi 4-0 in Bujumbura; Ethiopia beat South Africa 3-0 in Johannesburg in a major upset; Ghana’s Under 17 side defeated Guinea 3-1 in Conakry while Morocco whitewashed Niger in Niamey 11-0.

The return legs hold in a fortnight with the final six teams meeting in the fourth and final round to produce Africa’s three teams for the 2022 FIFA Under 17 Women’s World Cup slated for India between October 11th and 30th.
